HKIA Enhances Baggage Handling with Automatic Baggage Handling Management

Background

The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is one of the busiest airports in the world with tens of thousand pieces of checked baggage daily. The airport has been applying RFID technology in baggage handling since 2004 and taking initiatives to further enhance the operation.

The Challenge

There are more than 80,000 pieces of checked baggage daily. It was a manual handling process, as a standard checked luggage weighing up to 20 kilograms, required lots of labour effort in transferring from the conveyor system to the corresponding flight container. Definitely there was much room for improvement in the areas of workplace health & safety and the operational efficiency while meeting the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Safety and Security Requirements of baggage reconciliation.

The Solution

The client needed a new and intelligent way of baggage reconciliation to ensure all checked luggage loaded onto the aircraft belong to passengers who have actually on board. When HKIA introduced the semi-automated loading robotic arms to release staff workload in the operation, EBSL has provided a RFID device, which is a set of bespoke-design RFID reader and antenna, embedded at each robotic arm. Every device comes with a central control unit displaying relevant baggage information. The Solution can accurately identify, record and verify every baggage is loaded properly into the target flight and sending out alerts in case of mismatches. Also it can keep track of the specific container that houses the baggage by automatically matching and recording both ID information.

The Result

HKIA is the world’s first airport in applying this new invention. There are substantial benefits with the launch of this new system.

  • Increase automation and less labour-dependent at baggage handling operation
  • More efficient and accurate baggage loading process
  • Enhance aviation safety compliance
  • Improve passenger travel experience
  • Enhance workplace health & safety with ergonomics design integrated with RFID system
  • Intelligent design with exceptional mobility
